Albert J. Butterworth
Albert is a visionary artist, a genius inventor and toymaker, a loving husband to Helen and a doting father to Rose. Even from a very young age, Albert showed a natural inclination towards crafting and inventing, and after meeting Helen, a talented musician, this boosted his ability. Now, even in the darkest of times, Alberts's ingenuity and unending talent stay with him for better or worse.
Helen Butterworth
Helen is a kind and talented musician, who is beautiful in the truest sense of the word. A kindred spirit to Albert, she is his partner, best friend, and muse. Helen is brimming with life and has a musical talent that equates to Alberts toy-making abilities.
Rose Butterworth
Rose is the daughter of Albert and Helen. She is everything one would expect of the child of a kind and talented musician and a genius inventor. Rose encompasses her father's curiosity and not-so-secret love of playfulness combined with her mother's affectionate and caring heart.
“A Picture Is Worth A Thousands Words…”
This quote runs true in Tin Hearts where subtle narrative clues are spread throughout the game, especially in Act 1 - The Attic. Through picture frames, you are slowly introduced to Helen, Albert and Rose - the Butterworth family whose home you journey through in this narrative puzzle adventure game.
The first photo you will come across is of Helen playing the violin, this is the first time we are shown that Helen is a talented musician. This talent equates to Albert’s creative inventive abilities and they are two kindred spirits who have been brought together.
The second photo we come across moves us on to the wedding day of Helen and Albert Butterworth. As we can see Helen’s wedding dress is typical of the Victorian era in which the game is set: white in color (popularized by Queen Victoria!), with a long veil, a collared neck, and larger sleeves.
Thirdly we see the full Butterworth family together for a family portrait. The new addition, Rose, is the apple of Albert and Helen’s eyes. Everything one would expect of the child of a kind and talented musician, and a genius inventor, Rose encompasses her fathers curiosity and not-so-secret love of playfulness combined with her mothers affectionate and caring heart.
Finally, we see all three of the photos together - proudly displayed in the Butterworth family home.
